Welcome to the real world....the emphatic title that greets you at the door of the Gray's School of Art Degree Show 2022.
A brief day trip to Aberdeen proved to be quite worth the while in being able to see the Gray's School of Art Degree show on the final day. Having studied at the art school for 4 years and graduating from there myself, this was in fact the first time I have seen a physical Degree Show at Gray's. And it did not disappoint.
From the evocative painting to contemporary art practice, with colourful and sustainable fashion, photography, 3D design and stong communication design, the show had it all.
I am always intrigued to see what the Painting cohort have produced each year. Delicate drawings captured my attention as well as paintings which evoked memories of places personal to the artist. There were elements of a landscape, so fragile but so impactful.
There was also the lovely surprise of seeing my own work displayed in the exhibition. A triptych of drawings which I made for my own Degree Show, were featured as part of the RGU Arts and Heritage Collection. It was quite moving to see these on the walls of Gray's, where they should have been in 2020 if it had not been for the pandemic. Thank you to RGU Arts and Heritage for this opportunity.
I came away from the show feeling completely inspired by the artists and designers but also deeply excited for the 2022 graduates, knowing how many incredible opportunities lie ahead of them as creatives.
The Degree Show was an impressive world of creativity and glimpse of our future art and design leaders.
